A Med-Peds group practice, includes three alumni of our program: Dr. Judith Hunt, Dr. Alan Michels, and Dr. Lauren Washatka. This clinic serves as a rural site for medical students from UACOM-T and UACOMP participating in the rural LIC. Their office is next door to Banner Payson Hospital so they participate in caring for newborns at deliveries as well as the ER and see their own patients in the hospital. They utilize POCUS for diagnosing DVT’s and other ways to care for their patients. They also do home visits. They have TV’s in certain rooms to be able to call subspecialists who help them with subspecialty care when patients are in the clinic. The Neighborhood Christian Clinic is also close by, and they volunteer their time in the clinic seeing patients who are uninsured like the model we have her in central Phoenix. They have housing near by which is utilized by rotating medical students and residents that is free of charge.

Dr. Kent Johnson with Village Medical in Goodyear, AZ – Kent is an alumnus of our program and has been practicing in this community for 30 years. He has trained multiple graduates in our program with monthly rotations and community based continuity clinics. He has a busy practice with multiple APPs working with him. It’s about a 45 minute drive to his office from Phoenix. He can teach you a lot about the business side of medicine – billing/coding, templates to schedule patients, role of APPs in your practice.

This is an indigenous reservation with the Hu Hu Kam hospital located in Sacaton, AZ about 40 minutes from central Phoenix. They have a small ER, inpatient beds and subspecialty clinics located within the hospital with a very busy pharmacy. They have 2 separate dialysis centers on the reservation. They have a mobile unit that provides STD testing and contraception. The rotation here can be individualized for you based on your interests. They have 2 different ambulatory clinics: Red Tail Clinic in Chandler and the Komatke Health Center in Laveen. Dr. Viteri Giordano is an alumnus of our program and she coordinates the rotation. She works at the Red Tail clinic on Wednesdays seeing adults and worked at Banner Ironwood in a Med Peds practice for over 10 years prior to coming to Gila River. You must complete paperwork including TB screening and vaccination records prior to starting the rotation. The rotation typically includes working in the IM clinic at Red Tail and some of their Pediatric clinics as well with different providers. She can schedule you to work in some of their subspecialty clinics as well. It’s a great experience to gain a better understanding of the unique culture of the individuals living on the reservation and the many resources they have available.

This clinic was established from some the PCH PICU attendings many years ago. It serves a large Spanish speaking uninsured population with a spiritual component offering prayer with their patients. Dr. Andrea Morley, alumnus of our program is there Mon-Thur and Dr. Paul Lorentsen also Med Peds trained is the Medical Director. They provide dental, mental health, Ophthalmology, Derm, ID, Gyn services. Students from the UACOMP also rotate there.

Elective Rotations
Dr. Sanoe Harrison, alumnus of our program and a Pediatric Endocrinologist works in the ambulatory Med Peds clinic in Wrangell, Alaska as well as the Emergency Department. This is a very small community in Alaska with limited resources. You learn to determine when a patient needs to be sent to a higher level of care while seeing patients of all ages in the clinic. This requires months of advance planning as you have to obtain a medical license in Alaska to participate in this rotation (up to 6 months needed) and it’s only offered during certain months (unavailable during the winter due to weather conditions). Housing is available, an automobile to drive on the island and air fare costs have been refunded previously as they work hard to recruit other Med Peds physicians to work in this local community.

Dr. Phillip LeSueur is an alumnus of our program and he joined his uncle in this practice. He is actively looking for a new Med-Peds physician to join his practice as his uncle prepares to retire. He sees patients of all ages in a busy community practice. Housing not provided

Dr. Brett Brewer has a Med Peds practice with Summitt Healthcare in Show Low, AZ and is an alumnus of our program and graduated from UACOM-T. A rural practice in the area where he grew up. He also rounds on newborns and sees some of his own patients in the hospital as well as the office. Housing not provided.
